Title

If at the end of the day when cashing up your business you find extra money in your till, perhaps due to an error by the cashier, eg: you have done sales for R1000.00 but find R1200.00 in your till, what should be done with the extra money?

Question

If at the end of the day when cashing up your business you find extra money in your till, perhaps due to an error by the cashier, eg: you have done sales for R1000.00 but find R1200.00 in your till, what should be done with the extra money?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You should conduct an investigation with the cashier/s of your business regarding the true ownership of the over’s (extra monies’). If you are certain that the over’s do not belong to your business, then such monies should be returned to their original owner’s. However, If one cannot find the original owners, then such monies’ should be dispensed in charity (Sadaqah).
