Title

1. Is it permissible to look in the Qur’an and read a certain Surah, which I do not know by heart, while reading Nafl Salaah? 2. Can I make Du’aa in Sajda. In Fardh Salaah?

Question

1. Is it permissible to look in the Qur’an and read a certain Surah, which I do not know by heart, while reading Nafl Salaah?

2. Can I make Du’aa in Sajda. In Fardh Salaah?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1. In principle, it is not permissible for one who has not memorized the Qur’an to look into the Qur’an and recite any portion of the Qur’an in Salaah.

If one who has not memorized the Qur’an looks into the Qur’an and recites any portion of the Qur’an in Salaah, the Salaah is invalid.[1]

2. In principle, it is permissible for one to make Du’aa in the sajda of a Fardh Salaah if one performs the Fardh Salaah individually. [2] The aforementioned ruling is subject to the following conditions:

1. The Du’aa should be in Arabic.

2. The Du’aa should be a Masnoon Du’aa.

It is advisable that one does not recite any Du’aas, e.t.c besides the prescribed Tasbeehaat in Sajda as it is against the Sunnah to do so.
