Title

My name is Amar Salaam. I understand that one of the names of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) is Al- Salaam. Will I have to change my name?

Question

My name is Amar Salaam. I understand that one of the names of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) is Al- Salaam. Will I have to change my name?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu `alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The word Salaam is one of the names of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) which means “peace/security”.[1]

In principle, it is permissible to keep any name of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) which is not exclusive to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).[2]

It is permissible to keep the name Amr Salaam since the word “Salaam” as it is, is not exclusive to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).

And Allah knows best.
