Is it compulsory to recite another surah after surah al-Fatiha during a voluntory(nafilah) prayer

Answer

 

In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful


Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh

 

Qira'at (recitation) of Surah al Fatiha with another Surah is Wajib (compulsory) in every Rakat in Nafl (optional) prayer as well as the Witr Salaah.[1]

[1]  ( قراءة الفاتحة ) لقوله صلى الله عليه و سلم " لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب " وهو لنفي الكمال لأنه خبر آحاد لا ينسخ قوله تعالى " فاقرؤوا ما تيسر " فوجب العمل به ( و ) الثاني ( ضم سورة ) قصيرة ( أو ثلاث آيات ) قصار لقوله صلى الله عليه و سلم " لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بالحمد لله " وسورة في فريضة أو غيرها ( في ركعتين غير متعينتين من الفرض ) غير الثنائي وفي جميع الثنائي ( و ) يجب الضم ( في جميع ركعات الوتر ) لمشابهة السنة ( و ) جميع ركعات ( النفل ) لما روينا لأن كل شفع من النافلة صلاة على حدة
