Title

I have named my son Aziz Ahmad. Some people have said it is not permissible to name a child Aziz as it is one of the names of Allah swt. ..

Question

As-salamualikum

I have named my son Aziz Ahmad.  Some people have said it is not permissible to name a child Aziz as it is one of the names of Allah swt.

My understanding is that Al-Aziz is one of the names of Allah swt, and it is not permissible to name a child Al-Aziz, but it is permissible to name a child Aziz (without the Al- ).

I understand Al-Aziz refers to The most powerful, but Aziz (without Al-)  means powerful.  Aziz is an attribute of Allah swt, but Allah is Al-Aziz and not just Aziz.  Something can be more Aziz (or  powerful) than something else, for example man is more Aziz (or powerful) than a ant or other insect.  But only Allah is Al-Aziz,  The most powerful , and no other creation can be as powerful or more powerful than Allah swt .

I therefore believe it is permissible to name my child Aziz, but I seek guidance in this matter.  Is it ok to name a child Aziz Ahmad and call him Aziz?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

The names of Allah Ta’ala are of two catagories. The first category consists of the names that have a meaning exclusive to Allah Ta’ala such as Rahman, Khaliq, and Raziq. It is not permissible to name ones child with these names except with the addition of Abd (servant of) as they are only for Allah Ta’ala. As for the second category, it consists of names that are not exclusive to Allah Ta’ala such as Raheem, Rasheed, and Kabeer. Since these names were used by Allah Ta’ala Himself to refer to His creation, it will be permissible for one to name his child with these names without the addition of Abd. As for the name Aziz it will fall under the names in the second category and therefore will be permissible for one to name his child Aziz.
