My wife stopped takig "MATERNA" pills after we found out that it contains a prohibited substance in it.

Question

My wife stopped takig "MATERNA" pills after we found out that it contains a prohibited substance in it.

My Questions:

1) Is Materna really prohibited ( As this is taken with medicinal value)? if Yes Please let me know the reason and the specific substance to avoid.
2) Do you have a list of items like this or list of substances to avoid which are all found in day to day consumptions ?

Jazakallah,

Answer

1. According to the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa, Materna pills, manufactured by Wyeth, are harām due to gelatin derived from pork [i].  Therefore, it is not permissible to use these pills.  However, if a Muslim doctor states that there is a genuine fear of harm to her or the child by not taking these pills and there are not halāl alternatives present, then it would be permissible to take the pills [ii].

2. You should contact a local halāl food monitoring agency, such as the Halal Monitoring Authority (HMA) of , to try to obtain such a list [iii].
