Question

Wearing T-Shirts or Dress-Shirts with short sleeves has become a social dress and there is no intent of immodesty behind its usage except that it gives you comfort in hot climate and in office work.

Same is the case with pant/shalwar hems. As a social norm, we wear shalwars/pants having their lengths just below ankles. Doing so, has no intentions of pride at all as it is a social dress standard for every one. A sweeper or a peon wears the same length as a CEO of a multinational company or the Prime Minister of the country wears.

Knowing the fact that Islam does not interfere into the social customs and way of life of a region rather it encourages them. Islam only stops where the local traditions and customs are in-contrast with the rulings of Islam.

Keeping in view the above lines please answer:

  1. Is it allowed to wear short sleeve t-shirts or dress-shirts and is it permissible to offer prayers while wearing such type of shirts?
  2. Is it allowed to keep trouser lengths just below the ankles (not to the ground level)? If not, then please guide that if we are allowed to keep our trousers above the ankles while offering prayers and to the normal after prayers (in social life).

Please answer these queries with reference to Ahadith and/or a verse from Quran.
