Title

I want to ask that what is the correct method of performing sajda sahu according to sahih hadith.

Question

I want to ask that what is the correct method of performing sajda sahu according to sahih hadith. I know both methods Hanfi as well as ahl-e-hadith method.I always heard that hanfi method is  correct but i dont found any proof of it from sahih hadith, Plz tell me if there is any proof of  this method of "sajda sahu" in sahih hadith.

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

1.According to the Hanafi mazhab, sajda sahwa will be performed after the first salaam.

(Durrul Mukhtaar Vol. 6. Pg. 87. H M Saeed)

2.The Hanafi method of sajda sahwa is supported by the following sahih hadith.

“Narrated from Abdullah bin Mas`ud (رضى الله عنه) that Rasulallah(صلى الله عليه و سلم) perform Zohr on one occasion five rakaats, then it was said to Him that you have increased in the salaah, He asked why you ask that, the Sahaabah replied that you have read five rakaats, thereafter Rasulallah(صلى الله عليه و سلم) performed two sajdas after the salaam.”

(Sahih al – Bukhaari )

“Narrated from Abu Hurairah(رضى الله عنه) that Rasulallah(صلى الله عليه و سلم) performed either Zohr or Maghrib with us. After the salaam a Sahaabi enquired from Him if salaah had become shortened. Rasulallah(صلى الله عليه و سلم) asked the Sahaabah if it is true what he is saying, They confirmed, thereafter He performed two rakaats more and made sajda sahwa thereafter.”

(Sahih al- Bukhaari)

(Jaami-ud-Tirmidhi Pg.90 H M Saeed)

The same Hadith of Sahih al-Bukhaari is recorded in Jaami-ud-Tirmidhi, where Imaam al- Tirmidhi states that it is an authentic Hadith.

Imaam al-Nawawi has issued a very conclusive statement regarding this topic. He states “ If a person has to perform salaah behind an imam, and the imam has to make sajda sahwa, then whether the imam makes it before the salaam or after, the salaah will still be valid. The difference of opinions between the imam`s is based on preferability not permissibility hence both are correct ( before salaam and after).
